RWTH Aachen & Tokyo Tech collaborate with FANUC Corp. in Delta Robot Project

On June 5th, 2017, NRW Japan K.K., a 100% subsidiary of NRW.INVEST GmbH, the Economic Development Agency of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW / Germany), hosted an event in Tokyo on a German-Japanese research collaboration project in robotics, showcasing the joint research activities of RWTH Aachen University and the Tokyo Institute of Technology. Both universities have since 2015 been collaborating in industry-academia research with Japan's leading provider of automation solutions, FANUC Corporation. Prof. Dr. Ing. Dr. h. c. Burkhard Corves, Director of the RWTH Aachen IGM Department of Mechanism Theory and Dynamics of Machines, introduced one of Germany's leading technical universities and presented the exciting research conducted at his institute.

NRW Japan K.K. is proud to have helped initiate this project through its efforts to support exchanges and joint industry-academia projects between universities in Japan and Germany (NRW). R&D activities of Japanese corporates in NRW have gained more and more importance in the past decade. This exciting Japanese-German collaboration project was already presented at the Symposium on Robotics and AI held at the Tokyo Institute of Technology in Tokyo in October 2016. - The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) supported the joint research project through its PAJAKO programme which enables researchers and students from the participating universities from Germany and Japan to spend several months at each other's research institutes and conduct research in close cooperation with their industrial partner.

The partners in this collaboration, Prof. Dr. Ing. Dr. h. c. Burkhard Corves, Director of RWTH Aachen University's IGM Department of Mechanism Theory and Dynamics of Machines, and Prof. Dr. Yukio Takeda, Head of the Tokyo Institute of Technology's Mechanical Systems Design Laboratory as well as guests from a number of leading Japanese manufacturing companies and other guests with a special interest in robotics enjoyed an evening of discussion about the opportunities and challenges of state-of-the art robotics. Prof. Dr. Ing. Matthias Hüsing and Mr. Jan Brinker accompanied Prof. Dr. Ing. Dr. h. c. Burkhard Corves as members of the delegation from Aachen to Tokyo. The presentation is available for download at the NRW Japan K.K. / NRW.INVEST GmbH website:
